You serve others under pressure. Your life deserves attention, too.

The Tactical Inner Edge introduces CLEAR—a practical framework for understanding your emotions, choosing purposeful responses, and making room for recovery.

Written for public safety professionals and the people who share their lives.

Take the Assessment!

Discover your current strengths and choose an area to practice.

The call ends. What you carry may stay.

You know how to respond when someone needs help. You have learned to make decisions, manage difficult situations, and keep moving.

Understanding what those experiences are doing to you can be harder.

Maybe your patience is shorter than it used to be. You find yourself replaying an interaction, withdrawing from people you care about, or struggling to explain what you feel.

You want to do your job well and be present for your life beyond it. Both deserve your attention.

Start by understanding how you respond.

The CLEAR Personal Assessment invites you to reflect on five everyday emotional skills:

  • Noticing changes in your body, thoughts, and behavior

  • Naming what you feel

  • Understanding what may be driving your reaction

  • Choosing how to respond

  • Recognizing what you need to recover

Your results offer a starting point for identifying strengths and choosing your next area of practice.

There is no passing score. Answer based on what you typically do.

A story you may recognize. Skills you can practice.

In The Tactical Inner Edge, five public safety professionals experience the same devastating incident. Each carries it differently.

Through their stories, Dr. Michael Goold explores the emotional demands of public safety and introduces CLEAR:

Catch. Label. Explain. Act. Reset.

The book connects familiar experiences with questions and practices you can bring into your next conversation, your next shift, and your life at home.

Whether you work in dispatch, law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services, corrections, or probation—or lead or love someone who does—these pages offer a place to reflect and begin.

Your next step is simple.

1. Take the CLEAR assessment.

Reflect on how you typically respond to emotions and demanding experiences.

2. Review your results.

See where your responses suggest current strengths and opportunities for practice.

3. Choose one skill to practice.

Use your results alongside The Tactical Inner Edge to identify a practical next step.

“I wrote this book because the question became personal.”

Early in my law enforcement career, I believed that learning about emotional survival could make me immune to the effects of the job.

My own experiences taught me otherwise.

With support, I began finding language for what I was experiencing. That learning continued through my career in law enforcement, teaching, and coaching—and eventually became CLEAR.

I wrote The Tactical Inner Edge for people who know how to function under pressure but may have had little help understanding what that pressure is doing to them.

My hope is that you find something useful here: words for an experience, a question worth asking, or a next step you can take.

Dr. Michael Goold
Author of The Tactical Inner Edge

Make room for the moments that follow the shift.

A conversation where you listen before reacting. A feeling you can finally describe. An evening when you recognize that you need rest or connection.

Those are worthwhile things to practice.

You can begin by understanding how you respond today.

The CLEAR Personal Assessment is a tool for personal reflection, not a clinical diagnosis. CLEAR does not replace professional care.
